This week was full of tiny adventures! Something exciting took place each day at school. I totally adore all of my students and the teachers, so the days fly by! On Monday, I taught the entire day—woo hoo!! I was pretty wiped by the end of the day, but I was so happy. We continued working with action verbs in grammar. We also continued with our unit on the environment in science. There is so much material that needs to be covered in science, so most of the science class time is spent taking notes. The students don’t have textbooks or workbooks, so I have to write all the notes on the board and the student copy them into their notebook. They are pretty used to this, so luckily they don’t complain much! This week we are starting to talk about adaptations, and I have a really fun lab planned! Stay tuned to see how it goes! On Tuesday, Brittney and I were able to observe at Corinth Secondary School. In St. Lucia, secondary school starts in grade 7. I was able to observe a math teacher for Form 5, which is the equivalent of grade 11. Sadly, I was only able to observe one lesson; however, it was still exciting to experience. |
Wednesday’s adventure was my grammar lesson. As a final review of the four verb tenses we worked with, the students played a version of Guess Who. Each student wrote four sentences about themselves, one sentence in each tense. At the end, I read the four sentences and the class got to guess who wrote the sentences. The students had a blast! Thursday was quite an interesting day… When I arrived to school, there was a stray kitten on the school grounds. One of the students in grade 2 claimed the kitten was his, and assumed the kitten followed him to school. His teacher put the kitten in a box; however, she shortly realized one of the students in her class is allergic to cats, so she brought the box down to my classroom. After only about 10 minutes in the classroom, the kitten somehow got out of the box! She refused to stay in the box, so I had to hold her the entire day. I don’t even like cats, but I have to admit—she was adorable! Friday’s adventure was simply surviving the day. Just kidding…but seriously all the teachers and I were so relieved when the final bell rang. Students from the St. Lucia School of Music came to school to perform for the students. It was so much fun, but the students were wired for the rest of the day! Although I speak English 99.9% of the time, I have also picked up random Spanish and Creole phrases for things such as “sit down”, “what’s up?”, and “hurry up”. I always feel pretty proud when I throw those random phrases in throughout the day! |
On Friday evening, Brittney and I “limed” with some teachers from her school. “Lime” is basically the term they use for “hanging out”. We ate some delicious chicken and fries, and had a great time relaxing. Brittney and I were accidentally twinning; Dance Marathon never stops!
Saturday was spent at the beach. The weather and water were beautiful as usual. We didn’t even get hit with any rain showers, which was a huge win for us! When we got home, we decided to order pizza. Wow, it really hit the spot! Thursday marked exactly one month since we arrived in St. Lucia, so we are definitely starting to crave a lot of different foods from home.
Although we had a pretty lazy weekend, Sunday was exceptionally lazy. We slept in and lounged around the house for a while. We decided to skip the beach and spent the day at the marina. Of course we got our weekly ice cream, but we also decided to splurge and get a late lunch. I had a chicken caesar salad and it was DELICIOUS! Definitely worth the splurge. We sat by the water and played cards for a few hours. They only blew away a few times, but we left with all 52!

On top of the already adventure-filled week, I found out that there was an earthquake on Tuesday! Don’t worry—I slept through the entire thing. When I told my roommates and parents, they thought it was hilarious. I’m such a deep sleeper that I seriously slept through an earthquake!
I absolutely cannot believe I have been here for over a month already! I feel so comfortable here, and I am not ready to think about leaving. I'm so grateful to have been given this opportunity!
