I officially have less than two weeks left here! Even though I am looking forward to going home, I am pretty much in denial about the fact that I am actually leaving so soon.
The topic of assembly on Monday was family. To end assembly we listened to the song “We are Family”. The students were singing it all day, and it was so dang precious! Also, my mom sent me a picture of my dog cuddled up on the couch with my pillow. I can’t wait to spend my week off at home binge watching Netflix and cuddling with this precious little pooch!
On Tuesday, we continued working with making predictions in comprehension. I was finally able to use one of my favorite books, Enemy Pie. The students (and even the other teachers in the room!) absolutely loved the book! As soon as I read the title of the book, every person in the room was hooked. It worked out great for my lesson, and I am so happy I was able to share the story with them. In science we finished our unit on food chains. As homework, each student wrote a food chain for something they recently ate or drank. In class, we took the food chain and made actual food chains out of strips of paper. Even though they were small (trying to save trees!), they loved making them.

On Wednesday, we began discussing force. As an introduction, each student was asked to give an example in which force is used. I wrote all the examples on the board—some of these kids love to make the class laugh! After writing all of the examples, we went back through all of them. Each student was asked to come to the board, identify one of the force examples, and classify it as “push” or “pull”. Any excuse to get up out of their seat is a win for them!
Thursday was a very exciting day for Grade 3. St. Lucia is separated into a number of large districts, similar to school districts at home. District 1 hosted a sports meet on Thursday, and a number of students were selected to represent The Montessori Centre. Grade 3 was lucky enough to spend a few hours at the sports meet supporting our runners! Somehow we ended up smack dab in the middle of a HUGE school. They brought all 600 students from their school, whereas we showed up with 17 students. It was still very exciting to show our support! After returning to school, we worked on a grammar project focusing on comparative and superlative adjectives. Each student wrote what makes them unique using a simple adjective, comparative adjective, and superlative adjective. It was a fantastic way for the students to get creative and talk about the things they are proud of. Looking through all of their papers made my heart so very happy! |
On Friday, the lower school (pre-school through Grade 1) had their sports day. We were able to spend some time outside watching. It was a beautiful day, and I was grateful to enjoy it outside with my kiddos!
On Friday night, Brittney and I decided to get fish. We were craving pizza, but realized we have very limited opportunities to get fish from the street party. Even though the line was long, it was worth the wait per usual. One of my favorite things to drink here is guava juice, so I treated myself to some of that as well!
Saturday we were supposed to go zip lining, but sadly the plans did not work out. Although we were disappointed, we decided to embrace the day! We took the bus to Rodney Bay to pick up a few more souvenirs. We treated ourselves to smoothies for lunch. I had a Fruitella—strawberries, bananas, and nutella—wowza it was SO GOOD! My aunt Linda and cousins Ellie, Kendall, and Ava understand how obsessed I am with nutella, so I thought of them as I was enjoying my smoothie. We spent a few hours playing cards at the marina on Saturday evening. Even though it had a bit of a frustrating start, overall it was a pretty great day!

Sunday was so fantastic! The first time Brittney and I went hiking at Pigeon Point, we did not realize we had only hiked one part of it. There is a second mountain! I use this term VERY loosely, because both are much higher than hills, but they are too small to actually be categorized as mountains…so I don’t really know what to actually call them. Whatever they may be, they are my favorite place on the island. Last time we hiked Fort Rodney; however, this time we hiked Signal Peak. It is 330 feet up, making it the highest point in St. Lucia. Pretty neat, right?! This hike was much more difficult than the last. Fort Rodney had a concrete path leading up to the top; however, Signal Peak was basically the "path less traveled". While there was a clear and safe path, we were literally climbing all over rocks, sometimes on all fours. We felt pretty hardcore! After sweating our butts off, sitting at the top enjoying the view for at least 30 minutes, and slowly working our way down, I actually checked the weather and realized it was a real feel of 98 DEGREES! I couldn’t wait to get in the Sea. We spent the entire afternoon at the beach. I only have one weekend left here, so I want to soak up the sun as much as possible before I go back to the cold! The first time we went to Pigeon Point, we saw there was a man that brings his boat up on shore and sells drinks. We finally decided to try it out! I know that description of it sounds sketchy, but I promise he was legit. Brittney and I both got drinks in fresh pineapple. He cut the pineapple out and poured the drink right in the pineapple! We even got to eat the pineapple he cut out of it. It was so delicious! I’m so thankful for such an amazing day!
Thinking about all of the “lasts” is really starting to hit me. I find myself getting pretty emotional when I think about leaving so soon. I am starting to feel a bit stressed thinking about all of the things I still need to do before I leave St. Lucia, and even more stressed thinking about all of the things I will have to do when I return back home. Although it is easy for me to feel overwhelmed, I am doing my absolute best to embrace every day I have left here!
